It Never Always Gets Worse.......

About

Generally, I think blogging is a pretty self-indulgent pastime, particularly for someone whose life is as dull as mine.  Like Joe Kernan (CNBC’s “Squawk Box”), I never worried about identity theft…..after all, who would want my identity?

I originally started this blog to memorialize a long road trip with Kathy, Lola and Madeline (my wife and golden retrievers, respectively), in May, 2009.  These posts are archived in “Travels with Lola and Maddie.”

Otherwise, this blog is dedicated to my very unaccomplished career in ultrarunning.  For the uninitiated, “ultras” or “ultramarathons” are races of a distance longer than the standard marathon distance.  This simple definition does not do justice to the differences in mindset, pace, surface and participants when comparing a road marathon to a trail ultra.  More on that in future posts, but for now just a couple of remarks.  First, the name “Startslow” was taken from one of my favorite ultra sayings, referring to pace:  “Start slow, then taper off.”  Then, of course, my favorite ultra phrase (author unknown):  “It never always gets worse.”  In other words, when you hit a rough patch and things are going badly, the race is not necessarily going to spiral into disaster.   The disjointed syntax of this phrase may be an anathema to the English majors in my family (Kathy and son Chris), but it just conveys the idea well.

I try to remember this phrase in running and life…..and ignore the follow up, “But sometimes it does.”
